序
1945年8月、R. A. ニコルソン教授はこの世を去った。彼の後には、『スーフィーの教義ならびに経験 –– イランの偉大なる神秘詩人ジャラールッディーン・ルーミーの作品翻訳を通じて』と題された原稿が絶筆として遺された。原稿の本文は完成しており、ただ序文だけが未完のままであった。
この遺作に眼を通す作業が、出版社から私の許へと巡ってきた。栄誉あるこの義務を遂行するにあたり、私は我が師にして最愛の友人に対する忠誠心と共 に、序に相当する箇所を現在の形に整え直したが、その原文の大半は生前の彼自身が既に執筆していたものである。また、結語として添えた2つのパラグラフを除いて、私個人の見解を述べる自由を私自身に許すことは断じて避けた。
